How do I find the complete message header for an email?
To get the Internet message header for an email, find your email client below and follow the steps provided:
Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002/XP, 2003:
- Open the message in a separate window (double click)
- Under the View menu select Options
- Copy the text in the “Internet Headers” window.
- Open Outlook 2007 and navigate to the necessary email.
- Click on the Dialog Box Launcher located on the Message tab in the Options group.
- The headers will appear in the “Internet Headers”.
Microsoft Outlook 2010, 2013
- Open Outlook 2010 and navigate to the necessary email
- Click on the “File” Tab
- Click “Properties”
- The bottom part of the window should show the “Internet Headers”
Microsoft Outlook Express for Macintosh
- Select the email.
- From the View menu, choose Source. A new window will appear containing the email with full headers.
Microsoft Outlook Express 4, 5 and 6
- Select the email.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Details tab.
- Double click the message to view it in a full window.
- Click File and select Properties.
- In the Properties window, you can view the message header in the Internet Headers field.
- Open your browser and navigate to Hotmail.com
- Navigate to and open the necessary email
- Click the down arrow next to “Reply” in the message’s header area near the sender and subject.
- Select “View Message Source” from the menu
- Open your browser and navigate to mail.yahoo.com
- Navigate to and open the necessary email.
- Click on More and select View Raw Message.
- In the Juno mail client, click “file” and then “Save Message as Text File”. (ctrl-T).
- Give the file a name that you will remember.
- Double-click on the resulting file and then cut-and-paste the contents.
- Sign in to your email account.
- Open the email you want to view headers for.
- Click the View Full Headers icon.
- Open your browser and navigate to Gmail.com
- Navigate to and open the necessary email
- At the top right of the email message, click on the More Options button (three dots).
- Select “Show original”.
- Open your Mac Mail program and navigate to the necessary email.
- While viewing the email, click on the “View” category in the apple toolbar.
- Navigate to Message-> “All Headers”.
- Double-click to open the message in the in-box
- This link will appear at the top of the email: Sent from the Internet (Details)
- Click the Details link to view the message headers
- Click to open the message in the inbox.
- In the toolbar above, click More and choose View Message Source.
Note: If you have a popup blocker enabled, you may need to hold down the Ctrl button as you click View Message Source, or to right-click the blocked pop-up message and choose Temporarily Allow Pop-ups.
- Open your Thunderbird account.
- Chose the email you want to open.
- Click on the hamburger icon and click on View.
- Select Headers and choose All.
