How to Access the HAR file

The HAR file format is used by browsers to track session tools like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc. The HAR file is short for HTTP Archive format. The data is a copy of an entire web session from a specific site and can be utilized to investigate and troubleshoot complex issues. This file provides additional information about the network requests created in your browser during the occurrence of a problem.

The HAR file can be beneficial troubleshooting site performance issues among site rendering. 

Please be aware that an HAR files contains highly sensitive information such as all of your cookie history along with the personal information submitted by you like credit card details, passwords, etc. This allows anyone with the HAR to mimic your account.

In the event your HAR file is requested, check out the steps below to learn how to export it.

Chrome
  1. Open Chrome and go to the webpage on which you are facing the issue. 
  2. Click on the three dots on the top right corner, locate More Tools, and click on Developer Tools.
  3. Reach to the Network tab from the panel opened. 
  4. Locate around record button  in the left corner of the network tab. Make sure it is red. If it’s grey, click it to start recording.
  5. Click to add a check in the Preserve log checkbox.
  6. Locate the Clear button  to remove any existing logs captured.
  7. Reach out to the webpage on which you were facing issues while the network requests are recorded to be exported later as the HAR file.
  8. Once you have replicated the issue, click on the export button  to export the captured HAR file. You can also click on the grid and select Save all as HAR with Content, and save the file to your computer. 

 

 


Mozilla Firefox
  1. Open Mozilla Firefox and go to the webpage on which you are facing the issue. 
  2. Click on the three lines on the top right corner, locate and click on Web developer.
  3. Click on the Network option from the menu.
  4. Firefox automatically starts recording the network requests. 
  5. Once you have replicated the issue you were facing, right-click on the grid and Save All as HAR.
  6. By default, the file will be downloaded in your download folder. 

 

 


Safari

To create a HAR file in Safari, you must first have access to the Develop menu in the menu bar. If the option is not in the menu bar, select Safari and click on Preferences, and select Advanced. Then click on the checkbox to activate Show Develop menu in the menu bar.

Once the Develop menu is available in the menu bar, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Safari and click on Develop option in the menu bar. 
  2. Select Show Web Inspector from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on the Network tab and replicate the issue you are facing on the webpage.
  4. Safari automatically starts recording the network requests. 
  5. Once you have replicated the issue you were facing, click on the export button on the right side to export as HAR file

 

 


Microsoft Edge
  1. Open Microsoft Edge
  2. From the top right corner, click on the 3 dots to open the browser menu and select more tools
  3. In the dropdown menu, select Developer options. (Or press F12 to open the developer options).
  4. Select the Network tab and replicate the issue you are facing on the webpage.  
  5. By default, the session is captured by the browser. 
  6. Once you have replicated the issue you were facing, click on the Export HAR icon located in the menu bar, then hit on the Save button.
