HTML Display Errors in Different Email Clients

Delivery Updated on May 21, 2021

ISP’s like AOL, Yahoo, Gmail, and many others can cause emails to have a different appearance in their inbox. Not to mention that different browsers can also affect the look of an email. Benchmark is determined to help our clients have the best looking emails. By using our Drag n Drop editor you can ensure your emails will be mobile friendly, and if this isn’t enough we also provide an Inbox Checker feature, which allows you to view the way your email will look even before it reaches your contact’s inbox.

Best Practices for Creating Email Campaigns

Some email clients have certain restrictions no ESP can avoid. Here are points to consider for emails to display the same regardless of the email client or device being used to view it:

  • Use our Drag and Drop Editor- All email templates in the Drag and Drop editor are mobile-responsive
  • Link email to the web version:  Include the webpage version link in your email. Some email clients don’t comply with internet standards and may cause your email to look jumbled. Enable this option in the Permission Reminder block.
  • Background Images – The background color of an image will show when an email program can not display the image. Edit your background color to help the font color stand out. Not doing so may cause your email to appear blank.
  • Add Alt Text to Images – Alt text is used to describe images used in an email campaign. Most email clients do not display images automatically. Alt Text helps by providing a description of those images. The images with Alt text are least prone to be blocked
  • Image Alignment – In some cases, the images may be too large and may cover the text, or look like they are compressed. Align the image and reduce the size to clear up any formatting. If you are using our Drag and Drop editor, no need to worry this is done for you.
  • Avoid using long URL strings directly in a text block – Excessively long text without spaces, such as long URL added directly to any of the text blocks, may cause the text string to exceed the email’s width. To prevent your email from breaking, please use the Benchmark Link tool in the editor toolbar to link a word, sentence, or image. To learn more about our link options, click here.

When you’re done applying these points to your email, you may want to send a test email to yourself or people you trust. Try opening your test email on multiple devices and see how the design is modified. You can also use the Inbox Checker to view your email on multiple devices.
